KNITWEAR

Margaret Howell knitwear is renown for using characterful yarns including soft Scottish cashmere, merino wool and cotton linen blends. Following the below care and washing recommendations will ensure many years of wear and enjoyment.

General Care

Wool and cashmere knitwear does not need to be washed too often. It is naturally more resistant to dirt and dust and, the less it is washed, the more its unique character is maintained.

  • After wearing, hang garments to air before storing.
  • Prevent moths or other unwanted insects by keeping natural repellents such as neem oil or lavender in storage areas.
  • Remove naturally occurring pilling on wool and cashmere by gently combing with a good quality pilling comb.

Hand Washing

Hand washing helps to maintain the unique feel and character of knitwear. Hand wash programs on washing machines cannot replace the delicate and controllable nature of washing by hand.

  • Turn the garment inside out to help retain colour, especially for dark colours.
  • Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water (washing in water at a maximum of 30°C will avoid damage to the fibres) and use a delicate or handwash detergent according to the manufacturer instructions.
  • If washing more than one garment in the same water, separate into similar colours to maintain the garment’s original colour.
  • Disperse the detergent, submerge the garment, and gently wash it. Avoid soaking for longer than 30 minutes.
  • Gently squeeze the excess water from the garment. Never wring dry.
  • Drain and refill with lukewarm water, and gently rinse the garment to remove the detergent.
  • Gently squeeze the excess water from the garment and use the lowest spin setting on your washing machine to remove further excess water. Never wring dry.
  • Reshape the garment and lay to dry on a towel on a flat surface, out of direct sunlight.
  • Avoid hanging knitted garments to dry as they are liable to stretching.
