Launched in 2003, MHL. was introduced as a more playful, utilitarian expression of Margaret Howell’s design ethos – the functional details, fabric choices and ‘stamped’ MHL. logo taking reference from the pragmatism and authenticity of workwear and uniform.

‘Sometimes quality manifests itself in refined materials – Sea Island cotton, cashmere, silk. Other times the quality comes from the basic character or utilitarian nature of the product – a work jacket, a rubber stamp, or a paper bag. For me, the latter has always been the concept for the MHL. collection.’ – Margaret Howell

Retaining the attention to detail and integrity that underpins every Margaret Howell design, the collection draws character from the durability of fabric, authenticity of construction, and specialist print and dyeing techniques. Dense thread, bar-tacking and twin-needle stitching give each piece purpose and resilience, while signature MHL. details – cinches, corozo buttons and herringbone tape – underline its workwear roots.
