MADE IN OUR LONDON WORKROOM

The Margaret Howell London Workroom label represents a continued commitment to shirtmaking. Each shirt made in our new dedicated space in North London, is testament to our skilled team of people who share more than 175 years of combined knowledge and experience.

‘I found a shirt at a local jumble sale, it was a soft, pinstripe fabric and made beautifully, with tiny stitching and I thought I’d love to make a shirt like this.’ — Margaret Howell

In 1973, after several years of making shirts from her bedroom, the first Margaret Howell Workroom was established in Blackheath, South London.  A small team of skilled machinists were employed to realise Margaret’s vision to produce shirts with the highest quality of make combined with a more relaxed, contemporary cut and construction.

‘When you’re producing something, or making something, everything’s important. Every last detail has to be thought about.  The collar has to be notched and sit perfectly on the neckband. It has to be well cut as well as well stitched.’

Over 50 years later, and now based in our newly opened London Workroom in Harringay, a skilled team of cutters, machinists and finishers continue to create shirts to the same exacting standards that a modest jumble sale find first inspired.

Depending on the complexity of the style, a London Workroom shirt can take between three and four hours to make. With six stitches per centimetre and up to 20 metres of seaming in a more intricate design, a single shirt can contain 12,000 perfect tiny stitches.

Finally, each shirt has its horn or mother‑of‑pearl buttons attached before being hand‑pressed and finished – ready for delivery to our shops and customers worldwide, to be worn and enjoyed for many years to come.
